With long work hours and dual working households in India, eating freshly prepared hot food is becoming passé. Between operational problems with cooks and non-acceptance of ordering take-out daily, an unsatisfied need is exposed. Dine In is an enterprise that taps into this opportunity by offering a dependable, healthy, and convenient food delivery service. 
The basic intent is to eliminate operational problems by introducing a gap between cooks and client households. A sophisticated touch-point between the two helps manage communal cooking and delivery system. This food manager not only innovates in recipes but also trains the cooks and is face of the brand.

Engagement in re-heating and customising taste of food is key to personalisation, reinforced by ownership of heating module, the ceramic induction hob.
Feeding the booming Indian middle class, Dine In disrupts the semantic of eating take-out food. Dine InBox offers an exciting and engaging dining experience, delicately expanding cultural acceptability.

	Focus Area&#38;nbsp;With long work hours and dual working households in India, eating freshly prepared hot food is becoming passé in middle class India. Well-earning nuclear &#38;nbsp; households today cannot easily spare time even to dine together, and society is tending
towards fundamental changes
that may wipe out family dining experiences. 

The responsibility and pressure of this change falls entirely on women, and&#38;nbsp;the primary response is to adopt the
superwoman attitude, where she juggles both
professional work and household duties. Where is the opportunity?  &#38;nbsp;

I mapped the stakeholders involved, and designed a research plan to study the lifestyle of these households, their support systems, and existing products. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Research TracksI observed well-earning professionals, and their domestic cooks, branching off to learn in depth about both. In parallel, I studied current food-delivery products and running of community kitchens. I adapted my research targets and participants based on my real-time learning.&#38;nbsp;

The NeedNot only did working professional women need a quicker and easier way of feeding their family, but also a guilt-free solution to perceived irresponsible behavior. Hiring domestic cooks to save time on cooking included compromise, even as cooks themselves ran out of time to cook for their own family. Introducing a layer of management could greatly benefit both and improve reliability.&#38;nbsp;

Design &#38;amp; PrototypingDesign of the container central to the food-delivery system was pivotal: it needed to disrupt the semantic of eating take-out and offer clever participation by the lady of the house to lift the guilt. Re-heating of delivered food became the key trigger for a much-needed new experience.

ProductDine InBox, a one stop dining container is core to the system. It disrupts the semantic of eating from a take-out box—making it desirable, exciting! Together with its heating module and food module, Dine InBox brings a new buzz to family dining. Engagement in re-heating and customising taste of food is key to personalisation, reinforced by ownership of heating module, the ceramic induction hob.

SystemThe basic intent is to eliminate operational problems by introducing a gap between cooks and client households. A sophisticated touch-point between the two helps manage communal cooking and delivery system. This food manager not only innovates in recipes but also trains the cooks and is face of the brand.&#38;nbsp;Dine In offers a dependable, healthy, and convenient food delivery service.

Understanding the unique social structure of rural Malian villages, we realised the importance of a light in this off-grid context. Young men work collectively in the fields and take responsibility of organizing all ceremonies within the village. Women run community gardens in parallel, generating commoncash for healthcare and general welfare of the village.

Both parties would tremendously benefit from a light, increasing productive hours. Keeping with the collective nature of this society, we designed community lights that are solar powered. These are maintained by appointed villagers and generates income for the village through a renting model.

Keeping with the collective nature of this society, we designed community lights that are solar powered. These are maintained by appointed villagers and generates income for the village through a renting model. Using local materials and available tools, we built two prototypes of our design.
These sturdy and mobile lights were welcomed by the village, and celebrated in a ceremony thrown in our honor.

The Need for LightMen work the farms as a collective, and women run community gardens and produce craft objects, shea butter, commercial food items, and so on. Both would benefit greatly from a longer workday, especially in the fruit-picking season, where time is crucial. 

Even as international aid agencies pour in funding for street lights and public squares, they light a space and not an activity. Villagers would rather have light on their farms than have a lit pathway home.
	Understanding UsersUsing secondary and primary research approaches, we studied the unique context and environment of rural Mali. Activities included immersions, observations, day/night maps, and scenarios.

Brainstorming IdeasVarious concept directions were generated, leveraging locals’ existing activities and products. We prepared these ideas for in-person co-creation sessions. Concepts included using Calabas, or pumpkin bowls, donkey carts, cell phones, and childrens’ stick-and-tires.

We learned that individually owned lights would break the collective grain of the social construct. Ideas were adapted based on the response and lights designed to be unitedly owned by the village and positioned at the Chieftan’s home.

System DesignOne full charge of the lights would last 10-12 hours. This meant that the lights could be rented out to neighboring villages for a fee. This way the lights would become an additional source of income for the village.&#38;nbsp;
Prototyping &#38;amp; TestingThe lights were designed to be simple and easy to replicate, hopefully inspiring a succession of products within the community.&#38;nbsp;The lights were tested using prototype circuits and received curious looks from the villagers.

ConstructionThe lights were built entirely out of materials easily available around us. Infant cereal containers, motor wheels, and zip ties feature prominently. A solar-cell charger was built from scratch and installed permanently on the chieftan’s home.

	CelebrationThe lights were inagurated with a dance party where the village came together. They were transported by a donkey cart and turned on by the village chief. The lights overshadowed the generator-lit lamp typically hired for the dance. (seen on the left edge of adjacent photo)
